Food scene

An awesome, casual cash-only spot for seafood right by the water, and 1 mile from the house. Order at the counter and sit outside on the picnic benches, or head inside for a more traditional dining experience. They also have a Lobster Pound here where you can order raw or cooked lobsters (recommend calling ahead to place your order). They also have a great dessert menu featuring a ton of homemade pies.

A very popular brewery right around the corner from us (about a 2 minute drive). They also have great wood-fired pizza. It can get pretty busy in the summer on the weekend, so we recommend reserving a table ahead for dining. They have indoor dining, a covered patio, and non-covered outdoor seating out front.

A great Portland brewery opened a tasting room up in Freeport last year, located in the Shaw’s plaza. We especially love their sours. They’ve paired up with Nighthawk Kitchen next door, so you can order from the brewery tables and have your yummy burgers, sandwiches, and salads brought over to you. They have indoor seating and a great outdoor seating area with lots of picnic benches and cornhole in the back.

Located amidst the shopping area downtown, this modern casual Italian restaurant is one of the best sit-down meals in Freeport. They have a lot of indoor dining and just a few tables outside. We recommend sitting at the bar for the best experience–our favorite menu items are the smoked haddock cakes and the calamari.

Shopping

The original LL Bean was opened in 1912 in Freeport by Leon Leonwood Bean – a one-room store selling hunting boots. With 3 million visitors each year, the flagship store is now arguably the town's largest attraction, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.. LL Bean in fact has 4 stores in town: the flagship, a Home store, the Outlet, and the Bike Boat & Ski shop. Don’t forget to visit the famous Bean Boot outside the main flagship store. They also offer free yoga at 8am outside on the lawns every weekday morning in the summer. LL Bean is truly a spectacle so we recommend making a visit.

Outdoors

Only a 10 minute drive from the house, this park is a Freeport gem. The Park has approximately five miles of paths that wind through pine tree forests and along the seacoast. The trails are relatively flat so it’s a great destination for families. Adults pay $6 for entry, children 5-11 years old are $1, and seniors are $2. You can also check out the Wolf’s Neck Farm Store and Café for lunch, organic produce, pasture-raised meats, and an array of yummy Maine treats.

This lovely state park is another great spot for walking/hiking and is a 15 minute drive from the house. Although the mountain is just short of 500 feet high, you will get some lovely views of Casco Bay from the summit. Over 20 miles of trails attract hikers, bikers and horse riders, while families will find camping facilities and a playground for kids. We recommend entering and parking at the Hedgehog Mountain trailhead.

There are quite a few public walking trails in the area that we frequent, and you can access from the backyard (see map on the left). They’re all fairly flat and always pretty quiet. FYI the trails can get a bit buggy in spring/summer so we recommend wearing bugspray. Visit freeportconservationtrust.org/areas/ for more maps/info of other Freeport trails as well (Mast Landing Sanctuary and Leon Gorman Park are our other favorites)

Groceries

in downtown Freeport; Great local grocer that people love. Large enough that you can find all of your basic needs, as well as more local treats and specialty items. They also have a great butcher with local meats, a fish market, and a great liquor section with helpful (and friendly) employees.
