Everyone needs to eat! To save you a little trouble- here's a list of tried-and-true places you can go, starting with restaurants located in Arlington, then moving outward to some favorites 10 minutes up the road in Manchester.
(fine dining/ affordable) Boston chef Tim Wiechmann decided to open his second restaurant right here in Arlington. Want some perfectly prepared, truly German fare? House made beer and sausage? 10 different Vermont beers on draft, with some house made lagers and an even more extensive drink menu including delicious Gluhwein (mulled red wine with a dash of cherry liquor…) Lots of German specialties like pork schnitzel, sauerbraten, tender braised cabbage and all cooked to perfection. This is our new favorite restaurant and it’s only a 4 minute drive from here…

(family seating/ take-out) In spite of the rather average looking picture, the pizza here is actually quite good. There’s a bar, and an extensive menu that includes pizza, wings many different kinds of pastas. We had a shrimp and cream sauce over linguine that was to die for. Way more than you can eat on one plate, so come hungry or share. There’s also a big TV that’s always playing sports, so if you need a sports fix, stop on by. Good for the whole family/All ages.

(fine dining/ historical landmark) A trip to Southern Vermont would not be complete without visiting America's longest running tavern- where George Washington ate! The food and service is always GREAT- and we have a meal here every time we visit! Really, we eat here - Every. Single. Time. Don't miss this historical dining spot!

(Date night!) Want a romantic dinner for two, or a small party of cuisine-loving adults? This is your place. Make your reservations well in advance- you won't regret it. Silver Fork won Traveler's Choice "Best of the Best" for date night, 2021. We can attest - the food and ambiance are amazing!! The menu changes daily, with the seasons, according to what’s fresh in the market and what whims the chef is feeling that day. Make your reservations WELL in advance. f

(good and fast/ family dining)There is fresh and authentic Mexican fare in Vermont! Seriously, this California girl doesn’t take Mexican food lightly… All of the seasonings, preparation and ingredients at TAP are authentic, fresh and delicious. I should add that the street tacos are the real winners. Ask for extra avocado, and if they have the jalapeño cream - just get it, I promise its not too spicy! Extremely well prepared by some local guys in the kitchen… Totally family friendly (cheap) lunch or convenient casual dinner - not fine dining, but excellent "fast" food. Closed on Sundays.

(Fine dining/ Eclectic) This place is a hidden gem. Don't expect fast service, but you will get the most amazing fresh hot bread and Turkish food in an eclectic setting. You can order ahead if you have a large party- I found that to be the best approach - make a reservation for your party, and place your order in advance. The service was much better when we did that!

Sightseeing

You can drive to the top of the mountain, and there’s a turn off right on route 7A. But we try never to miss a day of hiking the highest peak of the Taconic range. At 3,848 feet above sea level, Mount Equinox offers a 360-degree view of Vermont, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and, on clear days, Montreal’s Mount Royal. There are plenty of options for your hikes, ranging from an hour to up to all day. You can hike to the top in under 4 hours if you keep it slow and steady! Visit the Carthusian Monastery at the top!

Located conveniently between Manchester and Rutland, the park is popular for its wooded hillside campground, beach and swimming area, and nearby attractions and tourist destinations. The park surrounds 20-acre Emerald Lake, named for the emerald green color of its waters when viewed from above. Restricted to non-motorized watercraft, the lake is ideal for swimming and paddling. The lake also offers anglers an opportunity to catch yellow perch, small mouth bass, northern pike and other warm-water species. The park is a favorite destination of hikers, with the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail nearby, and trails on Dorset Mountain.

Southern Vermont’s rushing, roaring section of the Battenkill River makes for some incredible water recreation. Cool down by swimming, tubing, rafting or paddling sections of the river. Access the river in Manchester and nearby Arlington, and plan to camp nearby. If you don’t feel like pitching a tent, lodging of all stripes abounds in Manchester. While there, why not head downtown for some outlet shopping?

The drive to the top is great, but remember that there's actually a great trail system starting behind the Equinox Hotel that has many options. You can do a one or four hour hike, you can explore beautiful trails without exertion, or you can climb to the peak and back. The reward for going to the top is refilling your water bottle at the top with the fresh spring water that is gushing out of the mountain. So fresh!
