Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is a fortress built in 1536 by the Spaniards to defend the city of Cartagena. The construction was done by slaves and lasted a total of 121 years. It was built on the hillside of San Lázaro. The fort overlooked both the bay and the city. This has led several invasions of the city impossible. Edward Vernon in 1741 tried to take the city, he had an army of 23,600 men and 186 boats. The guns of the boats of the English could just reach the outside walls of the defense. The guns of the fort was cut 70 of its boats.

It was built on the ruins of the Church of Merced and its construction was in the hands of Don Felipe Jaspe, who was inspired to do it and take as a reference the architectural structure of the Teatro Tacon in Havana. At the time when the work was started, Mr. Jaspe developed a project of Italian theater, with the traditional distinction between boxes and rear window.

Then again changed its name to the square on the occasion of his new role which was the trade of black Africans who came to be sold as slaves, so took the name of "The square slave", then he returned to be renamed in 1585 for "square Mercaderes" because at this time settled there many traders, was later called "the place de la Yerba" and finally after so many functions that fulfilled the square late last century was called "La Plaza de los Coches" name was coined because a decree allowing car parking in front of the portal sweets.
Although the official name of the square is "Ecuador", a name which was awarded in 1519 in honor of the signing of a treaty between Colombia and Ecuador. E full square the crowds were located to see the prisoners who were placed there to generally carry potential embarrassment. But the square is still named "Plaza de los Coches".
