This is our local pub, which is 1.5 miles from the barn and takes approximately 30 minutes to walk there. It's a traditional village pub, attracting farmers, tradesmen, locals and visitors alike. The food is traditional, wholesome pub grub, with very generous portions. For a relaxing, unfussy, chilled evening, definitely try here. The Garway Moon Inn Garway, Herefordshire HR2 8RQ

For a special occasion this is a wonderful place to go. The food and ambiance is lovely, but does come at a slightly higher price than the local pubs. In my opinion, it is definitely worth it. Booking is essential. The Bell at Skenfrith Hotel and Restaurant Skenfrith, Monmouthshire NP7 8UH

Sightseeing

A fantastic local walk - it's a very easy hill to climb and when you stand at the top on a clear day you can see 7 counties. There are wild ponies and grazing sheep all around the hill, which is so lovely to see. There is a small parking area, but also parking on the road close by is permitted. Definitely worth giving it a go.

One of the ‘Three Castles of Gwent’ (along with Grosmont and White Castle) founded by Norman lord William fitz Osbern in the early 12th century, the remains of Skenfrith we see today are of a later fortress constructed in the 13th century by Hubert de Burgh. Definitely worth a visit is you are interested in history. Perhaps combine your visit with a visit to The Bell for lunch (details of the pub in 'food scene' category).

White Castle is the best preserved and most imposing of the trio of Monmouthshire fortresses known as the ‘Three Castles’ – which includes Grosmont and Skenfrith – built to control the border. Originally constructed from wood and earth, a series of renovations transformed it into the significant defensive structure we see today. Definitely worth a visit if you're a history lover. Hereford is an English cathedral city majestically perched on the banks of the River Wye, in the county town of Herefordshire. If you’re after family-friendly fun, Hereford has 70 parks, cinemas, a theatre, golf courses, soft play areas, leisure centres, a thriving café culture and regular open-air markets. Hereford Cathedral is home to the Hereford Mappa Mundi, one of the world’s unique medieval treasures. Measuring 1.59 x 1.34 metres (5’2” by 4’4”), the map is constructed on a single sheet of vellum (calf skin). Scholars believe it was made around the year 1300 and shows the history, geography and destiny of humanity as it was understood in Christian Europe in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Definitely worth a visit - the cathedral is simply stunning. The Black and White House Museum - also known as 'the Old House' - has been called 'a perfectly preserved Jacobean timber-framed house'. It is a place which vividly tells both it's own immensely varied story and nearly four centuries of Hereford's history. Another must, particularly for history lovers. It will take approximately 25 minutes to drive into Hereford from the barn.

A beautiful place to visit for walking, cycling, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, river cruises and some spectacular countryside and views. The 40 minute river cruise with Kingfisher cruises is great - definitely worth trying. Canoes, kayaks and paddle boards can be hired through Wye Canoes - this is very popular in high season so booking is recommended. There is a choice of eateries, including the Saracens Head and Ye Old Ferrie Inn, plus various cafes. Most definitely worth a visit for any age.
