If you are unable to get tickets to the top of the Washington Monument try visiting the Old Post Office Pavilion. The free tour offers fantastic views of the nation’s capital. From the 270-foot observation deck visitors are treated to a views of the Capitol, White House, Washington Monument, Pentagon, Smithsonian museums, Supreme Court, and Lincoln Memorial. National Park Service rangers are on duty throughout the building to educate visitors about the building and surrounding attractions.

Visit the George Mason Memorial located along the Tidal Basin between the Jefferson Memorial and the FDR Memorial. George Mason was the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which served as an inspiration to Thomas Jefferson while drafting the Declaration of Independence. Mason later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Mason also withheld his signature from the United States Constitution because it did not abolish the slave trade and felt it lacked necessary protection for the individual from the federal government.

If you want to escape the city for a day take in some of the great historical sites within an hour of the city.
Take a short 30-minute detour outside of DC to visit thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including the Space Shuttle Discovery and a Concorde, in two large hangars. A great option if you are unable to visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
