The collection comprises more than 700 works of art, representing the most brilliant periods of German, Flemish, Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish painting. Leo von Klenze’s Neoclassical design (realized in 1836) proved a model for subsequent European museum architecture, and today continues to provide the setting for this treasure trove of Western art.
