This barely qualifies as a restaurant: there is seating for 2.5 people inside, and on good-weather days another 2 people can sit outside. But its lack of seating is honestly part of the charm: you're supposed to eat your folded slice of pizza on your feet, New York style... presumably so you can be on the phone, reading the news paper, and hailing a cab all in between bites. And even if you have no idea why any of that sounds charming to anybody, you'll still appreciate the perfected flavor and crust of a Slice of New York pizza.

I like this place for their coffee and work space. There is ample seating and free wifi, and the coffee is good and strong. They also have a basic sandwich menu, pastries, and ice cream if you're looking for a snack.

A little restaurant that's easy to miss from the road, with seating for handful of people inside. I'm a vegetarian so I can't speak for their meat dishes, but their vegan options are excellent! Their roasted eggplant+falafel wrap is the work of a genius.

Come here for your standard (d e l i c i o u s) Mexican fare. Prices are affordable, service is outstanding, ingredients are fresh, and the food is packed with flavor. You really can't go wrong.

100% vegan menu, but even meat eaters can abide. No matter what kind of crazy diet you might be on -- I mean I challenge you: try to think up a diet wild enough to phase these waiters -- they'll take care of you. Gluten free, sugar free, no grains, no nightshades, whatever your restriction is, there is something here you can not only eat, but truly enjoy. I promise.

Felton's trendiest new(ish) spot. Come here for upscale American fare in an intimate setting, or belly up to the bar and marvel at all their beers on tap. My only gripe is that they're short on vegetarian options.

Joe's is run by three women who know exactly what's up. The bar has a cozy community feel -- most people in there know each other, but they'll play a game of pool with any stranger. This isn't the place for fancy cocktails; come here for cold beer and live rock on the weekends.

Big Basin is the closest trail network to my house. There is a $10 fee to park within the headquarters area, or its free to park at your trailhead. If it's your first time, I recommend paying the fee and tapping the rangers for their extensive knowledge of the park and its trails. Tell them how long you want to spend hiking, your confidence level, and any other criteria... and they'll come up with a trail for you.

Naturally, this area picks up in the summer and is more quiet in the winter; but no matter what time of year, the beach is beautiful and the sealions are barking. Stroll down to the end of the boardwalk to see and hear the sealions, then stop for a drink and a taco before hitting the bowling lanes or arcade. The Beach & Boardwalk is the most iconic way to spend a day in Santa Cruz!
