Cromford hosts unarguably the best bookshop in the world (in our opinion), and an Oasis of a station that Some Might Say is the most famous in the world. 20 mins on the local train up the Derwent Valley.

Local Pubs

We have some of the finest unspoilt country pubs right on our doorstep.
Fabulous micro-pub. Just round the corner. The beers on offer depend on what they've been brewing recently, and what barrels they've swapped with other local breweries. Table service (even before lockdown). No food, but they encourage you to order from Fennels next door and bring it in!

A very traditional English pub, off the beaten track, that's probably just the same as it was 300 years ago. Beer poured from a jug and 3 open fires when it's chilly outside. Hot food at lunchtime and the finest pork pies in the evening. A healthy 1.5 mile walk from Tamworth House.

Sightseeing

Well, what can we say; this is probably the least visual of the UKs great castles. It was once one of England's largest fortifications, but was regrettably destroyed as recently as 1266 during a rebellion against the English Crown. Some of the stonework can be spotted, re-used around the village, but little else to see. But why not pay a visit, just to say that you've been there.

Wow. Chatsworth House is THE great stately home. Not just a museum, but the home the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, with vast estates, farmland and deer parks. So much to see, and marvel at, from the gigantic gravity-powered fountain, the gold-leaf covered window frames, extraordinary interiors and gardens to the real-life operation of a country estate with farms, villages and lots of deer and sheep. A must for anyone visiting Derbyshire.

Once one of England's largest castles. Sadly, a ruin for the last 400 years, but it's spirit lives on as it's stones were pillaged for re-use around the village.

This gem of a restaurant is one to allow yourself plenty of time in. They specialise in semi-fixed tasting menus of many courses, so go with an open mind, and be prepared to try anything. Take your own beer and wine. You can get to Belper by train in 5 mins, or bus in 10.
