Make a Felted Landscape in Inverness
Guests will be introduced to a wide colour palette of ethically sourced merino wool reflecting the rich colours of the Scottish Highlands. We will then tease apart and layer the wool to form a landscape scene before adding sparkling strands, and other felted fibres to represent sheep, trees and crofts. We will then sprinkle warm soapy water onto our artwork before rubbing it between 2 layers of bubblewrap. It's a bit like shinking a jumper in the wash! Our fibres will eventually bond, forming a firm piece of fabric. The artwork is rinsed and excess water squeezed out. Once dry, your unique felted landscape will be ready for you to take home and frame. Other things to note The cabin is accessed via a series of steps and gentle slopes which may be challenging for guests with limited mobility. My top tips are wear sensible shoes, bring layers and in summer something for the midges if you need it.
Learn to spin wool in the Highlands

If the weather is good we can sit outside in my croft house garden surrounded by stunning scenery, just off the North Coast 500 route. When you arrive I will invite you to come and meet my small flock of friendly sheep where we can start the journey from sheep to jumper. There will be Tea, coffee and cake and an introductory chat with examples and questions answered. We will set up wheels and talk through how all the equipment works. Wool preparation is important and I will show you how to skirt a fleece and which parts of the fleece are the best for spinning. Spinning is a craft that takes time to learn but in my taster wool workshops we can delve into the basics of setting up a wheel, learning to card wool in preparationn and experience the first steps in producing yarn using a "lazy kate", or a "noddy noddy". Support and guidance will be on hand at all times, if needed. All abilities are welcome. I can teach up to 2 guests at a time. Other things to note This experience will be held in my home and I have 3 collies, sheep and hens. Please let me know if you intend to bring a dog. Jim has a great local knowledge of different tracks, trails and roads to make sure that you will have a unique experience in this beautiful corner of the Cairngorm National Park. With him you can discover abandoned farms, ride through the forest on ribbons of pine needles or soar above the Dava Moor on spectacular tracks. Your guided ride finishes back in Grantown on Spey at The High Street Merchants art cafe where we can enjoy a well deserved lunch.
