A great drive to see easily view the entire Silicon valley. It is a favorite low key drive for an afternoon. At the top of Mt Hamilton, the Lick Observatory offers interesting tours, light education and cute bookstore. Weekends the road, which is very windy can get heavy traffic and be slowed down by bikers who love this day aggressive bike ride

Built in the late 1800s on top of Mount Hamilton, this was the largest telescope in North America at the time. It's a windy 19-mile drive (takes about 45 minutes), but the history, and views are worth it. You can see the entire Bay Area, Monterey Bay, and on clear days, you can see all the way to Yosemite National Park to the East. They do tours several times each day. There is a small gift shop on site, and they have tables for picnicking.

Tallest peak in the San Francisco Bay area. Mount Hamilton is a mountain in California's Diablo Range, in Santa Clara County, California. Mount Hamilton, at 4,265 feet (1,300 m) is a mountain overlooking Santa Clara Valley and is the site of Lick Observatory, the first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory. The asteroid 452 Hamiltonia, discovered in 1899, is named after the mountain. Golden eagle nesting sites are found on the slopes of Mount Hamilton. On clear days, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey Bay, the Monterey Peninsula, and even Yosemite National Park are visible from the summit of the mountain

A longer and more challenging trip, the road to Lick Observatory is a breathtaking and, in some cases world-changing experience. A roughly 50-60 minute drive, the scenic route to the observatory takes visitors on a tour through the backside of the East Foothills. Seen for miles around, Lick Observatory sits solemnly atop Mount Hamilton, eagerly awaiting guests. The experience driving to the observatory is highly variable as weather conditions towards the peak can dramatically alter your experience from others. We've gone on a cloudy day only to break from the gloomy cityscape and rise just above the clouds. The view was absolutely breathtaking. In the winter months, the surrounding mountain is high enough to receive snow, although we don't think the road is open to visitors during this time. The destination, Lick Observatory is a grand and stellar marvel. On the right day's visitors can enter and explore the observatory, even chancing a candid tour from some of the resident astronomers. Beyond the observatory lies a road to the East Bay, Livermore. The sight and journey up to Lick is truly a life experience and worth the half day.
