Honister Slate Mine not only offers traditional mine tours, but also a host of outdoor adventures too, including via Ferrara and Climb in the Mine. There are also a number of great hikes that start from here.

Located at the top of Honister Pass, Honister Slate Mine is perhaps not for the faint hearted. There are mine tours, canyoning, the infinity high wire bridge and the Via Ferrata Extreme Climbing Experience including mountain edge exposure and high ladder climbs amongst others. Check out the website Honister.com. Advance booking is essential for any of the activities.

At the top of Honister Pass that connects Buttermere with Borrowdale, south of Derwent Water, the Honister slate mine has been mined for slate since the early 1700s. Today, Westmoreland Green Slate is still extracted from the mine and used to create a whole host of beautiful and functional products. However, these days, the mine is better known for the various adventure activities it offers, including the exhilarating Via Ferrata. On rainy days, you can seek shelter from the elements inside the mine, where you can take a tour on foot or attempt to climb through some of the less accessible sections.

Honister Slate Mine, Honister Pass, Keswick, CA12 5XN. Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England. Quarrying for Westmorland green slate has been taken place in the area since 1728. Cafe, toilets, shop selling slate souvenirs (from key rings to enormous slate garden statuary) free car parking, amazing views. Mine tours and Via Ferrata guided climbs available; probably best to prebook.
