The Paleochristian catacomb of Porta d'Ossuna certainly represents the most monumental testimony of the first Christianity in Sicily, as well as of the city of Palermo in the late antique age. The complex was discovered in 1739 during the construction of the Cappuccinelle convent and explored by the Prince of Torremuzza, while in 1907 it was studied for the first time by Joseph Führer and Victor Schultze. During the Second World War the catacombs were used as shelter by the population to take shelter from the bombings.

Databili tra il IV ed V secolo d.C., furono scoperte nel 1739 durante i lavori di costruzione del Convento delle Cappuccinelle; nel 1785 fu sistemato l’ingresso. Poste a poca distanza dal limite urbano, sono formate da corridoi, gallerie e loculi che si estendono per alcune centinaia di metri verso occidente.

Una catacomba paleocristiana della città risalente al IV-V sec. d.C. Si pensa che la catacomba servisse alle riunioni dei primi cristiani che dovevano rifugiarsi in luoghi nascosti per poter professare la loro fede. La visita guidata è particolarmente coinvolgente, perchè riporta indietro di numerosi secoli tra le profonde gallerie scavate nella calcarenite. Ha una programmazione di eventi di musica e teatro dentro la Catacomba per un'esperienza fuori dal comune.
