This is the beach where the famous Pipeline surfing competition is held. During the winter the waves are so big that it is unwise to even get in the water. 40 foot waves happen almost every year during the winter months.

Sunset Beach is one of the top surfing beaches. It is a beautiful beach to visit and just watch the surf. The water is very blue, gets deep very fast and can have serious rip currents depending on the season. In the summer it is calmer and nice for a cool dip. In the winter, this is a big surf spot. You can go there to watch some of the surf contests then and see world class surfers competing. It is quite exciting. The beach has a lifeguard.

Sunset beach is one of the iconic beaches of the North Shore, along with Waimea, and Pipeline. These beaches are the scene of the Triple Crown surfing contests in December. They are also great fun for swimming and boogie boarding. Do be aware that the waves can be dangerous and follow all life guard notices.
