Take a 2 hour drive (4 hr round trip), to Tellico Plains, TN along the Cherohala Skyway and stop at the visitor center for maps and information about the area.

Pick up maps and info before heading across this scenic route to NC (2 hours, many viewing stops). They've got info about many activities in the area as well.
