If you want a quaint but cool Alaskan town experience near Wasilla, possibly with a great view of Denali, head to Talkeetna. There are plenty of good eateries. I recommend Denali Brewing, in either of their locations, or The Roadhouse (if it's open). Great local art and shops to peruse. It can be overrun during the summer, so be prepared for lots of people. Shoulder seasons are a little better. To avoid crowds, go to Flying Squirrel Bakery or the Denali Brewing location on the Talkeetna Spur Road, instead of in downtown.

Unique little down that you can walk around easily and shop in many tourist stores, dine, and take in the Talkeetna and Susitna River views, fish, camp and check out the Denali Brewery. Winter time offers great Northern Lights viewing when they are out. There are spots that you can also view Mt. McKinley if the weather is good

The tiny, funky town of Talkeetna is classic small-town Alaska. Just a few hours north of Anchorage via car Talkeetna is not to be missed.
