If there is an affordable place for good wine that is centrally located and accessible. The Refinery is a good choice. It is located inside an alley of Hai Ba Trung CBD, where you happen to find so many options in food and drink, I still pick Refinery for wine.

As soon as Indochina was conquered, the French understood the financial benefits they could reap out of the opium trade. Usage was already widespread in the local community. In 1861, two Frenchmen acquired the rights to trade and they quickly became very prosperous. By 1881, the Governor of Indochina decided to exercise direct control over the refining and sale of opium in the colony. The concession had passed from French to Chinese hands and there were security concerns over the situation. The refinery – La Manufacture d’Opium – was build that year. You can still admire the old logo, an interlaced wrought iron O & M, in the main gate as you enter the courtyard from Hai Ba Trung Street.

Making great use of an iconic location, Saigon’s old “Manufacture d’Opium” (1881), The Refinery was build, designed and decorated locally with custom made furniture and lighting in the greatest Paris bistro tradition. A French Brasserie and Wine Bar tucked away in a secluded courtyard, The Refinery offers a large covered outdoor terrace with comfy armchairs to relax the day away as well as a beautiful interior with many original architectural features. While the bistro serves excellent food – do not leave without sampling the various platters – the wine selection is superb with 17 Old and New World wines on offer by the glass. Events around wine and food pairing are organised regularly.
