Basically an abandoned naval town/ base. You can go to the park on the South end and climb the hill for an overview.

Beautiful, desolate old navy station, nice Victorian houses and beautiful botanical garden. A beautiful stroll

Every day new things pop up on Mare Island, go explore, get some views, food and shoot some golf...this place is coming up!

The navy started shipbuilding operations in 1854. The museum is housed in a large non-reinforced 1855 brick building. A look into what Mare Island was like during when it was busy building and overhauling ships for the Navy. A guided tour of Mare Island Historic Park is a great way to see all the highlights and to learn about the history of this fascinating island. Sites you will see include the stately Colonial Revival era mansions of Officers Row, St. Peter’s Chapel with its Tiffany stained glass windows, Alden Park, the Mare Island Museum (Bldg. 46), and the drydocks along the waterfront of Mare Island Strait. Tours of Mare Island last about 2.5 to 3 hours.

Great American and California historical US Navy Base. Ships built here fought in the US Civil War. Some of the first nuclear submarines were built here.
