Beautiful walk to a black stone beach, especially lovely at sunset

At the end of Hwy 137 is Kalapana. The village itself was buried in the lava about 30 years ago, but there is a brand new shiny beautiful black sand beach after a short walk through the lava field, called Kaimu Black Sand Beach. It's not a swimmable beach but far better looking than the more famous one at Punalu'u (which I think is overrated. The sand there looks more grey than black to me). The best at high tides. (At low tide, the sand mostly disappear).

Famous Kaimu Beach was buried by lava in the 1980s. Park at the end of the road and hike across lava flows to new black sand beach. Check out the "before and after" photos at Uncle Roberts.

See the beginning of a vast expanse of hardened lava and black sand beaches. Great local farmers market with live music at Uncle Robert's on Wednesday nights.

Within the land trust of Native Hawaiian Kingdom, a truly unique experience with cultural history, talk story, local foods, beautiful black sand beach, UFO landing sight and more!
